The text contains a large number of worked out examples, as well as more than exercises with over total questions to give students practice in both the computational aspects of the course and in developing their proof-writing abilities. The text makes a gradual transition from computation in Chapters vectors, matrices, linear systems, inverses, determinants, eigenvalues to the general theory of abstract vector spaces in Chapters span, linear independence, basis and dimension, linear transformations, kernel and rangeculminating in deeper material in Chapters orthogonality, complex vector spaces, inner product spaces.
A major purpose of this text is to assist students in attaining a level of abstract thinking essential for further mathematical study.
