This is not a ‘civil war’ story, nor is it a ‘wild west’ story so why DSP have put it under those categories is anyone’s guess. This is a time when to love a man held far more risks than it does today.

Don’t be that selfish keeping your talent away: The authenticity of the setting and language, plus the attitudes and beliefs of the characters is a credit to the author’s research. It transports you to the years right after World War I in New York City, and it keeps you bondw effortlessly, without overelaborate description or anachronism.

Chevalier explores the very real torture that inhabits the hearts and souls of two men who have lived through the horror of a world war and now must cope with the half-life existence a post war America has to offer.

The slow progression of understanding and healing that it takes to bring these men together is very realistic. This worked for me because both were keeping time avoiding life but they bring each other alive and back into the rush.

I’m in love with both the writing and character development. His body, broken by the war, is deteriorating more and more, but he won’t eqrth anything about it. Michael is a wonderful character.

It’s an interesting period in history gn.xhevalier it was a time of great prosperity, and were there was a shift in the previous strict Victorian ideals. Again this was not done in a heavy handed fashion, and there is much to overcome before the end, but I loved how Michael’s gentleness and persistence led to his having something precious in a family who genuinely loved and cared for him.
